On the way home, we detoured and went to Crater Lake in OR. It was a wise decision! We drove through the mountains of OR which was incredible. We live in a BEAUTIFUL state. I had to keep pinching myself. As it is only about 3.5 hours from our house with many places to camp and a plethora of hiking in the mountains, this area will probably be our next destination for a weekend camping trip.
Crater Lake was formed when a volcano collapsed Mt. Mazama and created this caldera which filled with water. The water comes from rain and snow melt, so it is very clean! It is also the bluest water! It is 5 ft by 6 ft long and 1943 ft deep which makes it the deepest lake in the US and one of the 10 deepest in the world!
This is Wizard Island which was made later after further volcanic activity.
